The government has not granted the request of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to take her abroad for treatment. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said this at a briefing on Sunday afternoon. He said, "We cannot approve Khaleda Zia's request to take her abroad in the opinion given by the law ministry." Khaleda Zia's family appealed to the government last Wednesday to take her abroad for treatment.
On the same night, Khaleda Zia's younger brother Shamim Eskander visited the residence of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Dhanmondi.
There he handed over the application form. Later, the application was sent to the law ministry for comment from the home ministry.
After verifying the application, the law ministry sent it back to the home ministry on Sunday with a legal opinion on the matter. According to sources, the law ministry has said that there is no opportunity in law for a convicted person to go or be sent outside the country's borders. Khaleda Zia was convicted in this case.
If she is to be sent abroad, his sentence must be waived first. Since the court has sentenced him, the state has the sole power to commute his sentence. Now the state will decide about it.
