Myanmar's army chief Min Aung Hlaing will hold a special meeting with South Asian leaders next week. A number of Myanmar leaders and activists, including a Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman, confirmed the information on Saturday. Spokeswoman Tani Sangrat said Hlaing will attend a special meeting with leaders of ten countries of the Association of South Asian Nations in Jakarta, Indonesia on April 24 to discuss the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. Meanwhile, the Myanmar junta has announced the release of 23,000 prisoners.

They made the announcement amid military killings, arrests, abductions and disappearances across the country.

The army plans to release prisoners during the Buddhist New Year holiday, but it is unclear whether anti-junta protesters and detained journalists will be released, a prison official said.
