On the occasion of the historic March 7, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with flowers. The Prime Minister paid her respects by laying a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi on Sunday morning. After handing over the wreath, the Prime Minister stood in silence for some time paying homage to the memory of Bangabandhu, the symbol of independence. Sheikh Rehana, the youngest daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was with her sister Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the time.

Later, on August 15, 1975, prayers were offered for the forgiveness of the souls of the deceased. The Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon confirmed this information. On this day in 1971, Bangabandhu in his fiery and passionate speech called upon the people to fight against the Pakistani occupying forces for achieving the long desired independence. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the de facto independence on March 7, 1971 at a gathering of millions of freedom-loving people at the then Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) and said, "This time the struggle is for our liberation, this time the struggle is for freedom."
