A formal complaint has been filed against Myanmar's state adviser Aung San Suu Kyi. The country's police have asked for a detention order until February 15.

Myanmar's military has confirmed that it has taken control of the country after the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders in the morning. The coup comes after tensions between the civilian government and the military escalated over a disputed election. A one-year state of emergency has been declared. Aung San Suu Kyi's NLD won a majority in the November election.

But the military has accused the military of rigging the election. On Monday, the military said it was handing over power to Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Laing. Myanmar, also known as Burma, was ruled by the military until 2011.

Ms Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for several years. The first session of the newly-elected parliament was scheduled for Monday, but the military called on the government to adjourn.
