BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that writer Mushtaq Ahmed was tortured to death in Kashimpur jail in Gazipur.

Mushtaq was not a looter or a black marketeer, a terrorist and a robber, but a meritorious student of Fauzdarhat Cadet College.

He strongly condemned and protested the death of author Mushtaq Ahmed. Mirza Fakhrul said that in the current age of information technology, social media is an opportunity to express the views, analysis, etc. Universally recognized.

But the present authoritarian Awami government in Bangladesh is not tolerating any kind of criticism or post on social media through Facebook to prevent any kind of criticism against their misdeeds and terrible misrule.

Those who are trying to express themselves freely in the media are facing a terrible tragedy. Either they have to go missing or they have to die in government custody.

His latest ruthless victim is Mushtaq Ahmed. He said that through this fearless self-sacrifice of Mushtaq, the young society of the country will wake up and good governance and rule of law including freedom of expression and civil liberties will return to the country.

Mushtaq was an honest and courageous man, he will always be a beacon of inspiration to the disenfranchised.

He will exist forever in the prayers, consciousness and feelings of the countrymen. There is a suffocating atmosphere in the country due to lack of law and order and judicial system.

The death of a freelance writer on Facebook, an apolitical, innocent and autonomous thinker like Mushtaq, is not a normal occurrence, with state power involved. I strongly condemn and protest the death of Mushtaq Ahmed in prison.

I express my deepest condolences on his death and seek forgiveness from the departed soul. Besides, I am demanding the formation of a transparent, independent and impartial judicial inquiry committee into the death of Mushtaq Ahmed in custody.

I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family and well-wishers of Mushtaq Ahmed.
