Students blocked the Barisal-Kuakata highway for about two hours after beating and insulting two students of Barisal University.
At that time, they protested by burning tires on the road. This caused severe traffic jams on both sides of the highway. Ordinary passengers fell into misery. BRTC bus workers beat and assaulted two students of Bobby at Rupatali bus terminal on Tuesday afternoon.
The students then blocked the highway and started protesting in the Rupatali bus terminal area. A bus worker was arrested in the incident. The students lifted the blockade at 4pm after the university's assistant proctor and other police promised legal action against the accused workers.
The protesting students said that students of the university's economics department Taufiqul Sajal and Farzana Akter went to the BRTC bus counter at 12:30 pm to go home.
There they had a quarrel with a bus worker named Rafiq. Rafiq beat Sajal for this. Farzana was also allegedly assaulted.
When the news spread among the students of the university, they went to the spot at half past one. They started the blockade by burning tires on the road from 2pm. Assistant Proctor of the university Supravhat Haldar said that after receiving the news, he and other teachers went to the spot and talked to the police officials and assured to take legal action against the bus workers.
The students lifted the blockade at 4 pm. Kotwali Model Police Inspector (Investigation) Officer. Asaduzzaman said the accused Rafiq has been arrested.
