Awami League nominated candidate former mayor Lutfur Rahman has won the Kanaighat municipality election in Sylhet.
He was elected mayor by a margin of 142 votes with the party symbol Nauka. His nearest rival was independent candidate Sohail Amin (Jag Pratik). Lutfur Rahman got 3,828 votes with the boat symbol and his nearest rival Sohail Amin got 3,686 votes.
Incumbent Awami League rebel candidate Nizam Uddin got 3,063 votes with the coconut tree symbol.
Earlier, the Kanaighat municipality election was held in a festive atmosphere.
