Seven people have been arrested in Rajshahi on charges of extorting money from a dead body at a hospital.
According to the police, he was a member of the gang of extortionists and brokers of the vehicle carrying the body. Abdullah (32), Md. Rajan (35), Md. Badsha (40), Emdadul Haque (40), Md. Biplob (50), Zahid Hasan (26) and Janarul Islam (28).
Their homes are in different areas of Rajshahi metropolis. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) spokesman Golam Ruhul Quddus said in a press release on Monday. He said a man named Joynal Abedin from Meherpur died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Laxmipur in the city on Sunday afternoon.
Then the relatives were taking the body in their own car. But then Abdullah and Rajan blocked their way.
They stuck the corpse and demanded extortion. They say that if any body is to be taken to their area from here, they have to be taken by ambulance to Rajshahi. If not, they will have to pay Rs 10,000 to the micro association carrying their bodies.
In this way they keep the corpse. Relatives of the deceased were forced to report to the City Detective Branch (DB). Abdullah and Rajan were first arrested.
Five others were later arrested on the basis of information provided by them. Legal action has been taken against them. The relatives of the deceased also went home with the body later.
