There are 82,654 prisoners in different jails of the country. Among them, 79,454 are men and 3,200 are women, said Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
The Home Minister said this in response to a question from Mamunur Rashid Kiran of Noakhali-3 constituency in Parliament on Thursday.
In Parliament, the Home Minister further said that in order to increase the capacity of the prisons, the old, dilapidated prisons have been rebuilt on a large scale and these activities are underway. As per the directive of the Prime Minister, the capacity of the newly constructed Central / District Jails has been increased by using them as Jail-1 and the old Jail as Jail-2. Since 2009, a total of 17 prisons have been newly constructed and 2 prisons have been expanded. As a result, the capacity of the prison has increased to 14,418.
Replying to a question from Didarul Alam, Member of Parliament for Chittagong-4 constituency, the Home Minister said the number of police personnel was not enough to maintain law and order in the capital Dhaka and the commercial capital Chittagong. If a proposal is received from the concerned district / unit to increase the manpower in these two cities, the matter will be considered in terms of necessity.
He added that in the last two terms of the present government, a total of 9,456 new posts of different posts have been created in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and 2,131 new posts of different posts in the Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
