China has arrested at least 50 pro-democracy politicians and human rights activists in Hong Kong for violating national security laws. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has threatened retaliation for the arrest of a politician and human rights activist.
On Thursday, Pompeo said Washington could impose sanctions on those involved in the arrests of 50 pro-democracy politicians and human rights activists, and that the US ambassador to the United Nations would visit Taiwan.
Pompeo said he was "shocked" by the arrest of a US citizen in Wednesday's raid. The United States will not tolerate arbitrary detention or harassment of U.S. citizens.
Hong Kong has been protesting against China since 2019. According to them, China is violating the 1984 agreement. After gaining independence from the United Kingdom, China took over Hong Kong. But Hong Kong is given special rights. Hong Kong is very different from China in terms of trade and democracy. They had free trade agreements with the West.
But since 2019, China has been hurting democracy, accusing Hong Kong of starting a movement. The movement reached such a stage that China adopted a repressive policy.
