Onion imports through Healy land port were suspended for three and a half months due to the ban imposed by the Indian government. On December 28, the Indian government lifted the ban on onion exports. Since then, the price of onion has been declining in Hili market in Dinajpur. On the news of import, the price of domestic onion has come down to Tk 8 to 10 per kg. Demand from buyers has also increased due to lower onion prices.
The port is closed on January 1 due to weekly holidays. Therefore, it has been learned that onion import may start from January 2 through Healy land port.
The onion seller in Healy Bazar said, "I sold onions two days ago at Tk 40 per kg." I sold the onion on Thursday at 35 to 36 rupees per kg. I am selling that onion on Friday at 30 to 32 rupees per kg. With the Indian government lifting the ban on onion exports, Indian onions will arrive in the country in the near future. For this reason, the price of onion has come down in the market. Earlier, the price of onion in Mokame was Rs 1,200-300. On the news of arrival of Indian onion, the price of that onion has come down to Rs 1,000.
Taj Hossain, who came to the market to buy onions, said that the price of domestic onions has come down by Tk 8 to 10 per kg on the news that Indian onions are coming. Indigenous onions are being sold in the market at 30 to 32 rupees per kg.
Healy Land Port Import Exporters Group President said that the onion importers at Healy Land Port have already started operations as the Government of India has lifted the ban on onion exports. However, the number of LCs and the amount of onion imports will depend on the market price of the country and the demand for Indian onions. Onions will start coming from January 2 of the new year. He also said that if onion imports from India start, the price of onion in the country's market will come down further.
It may be mentioned that on September 14, India stopped the export of onion on the pretext of the crisis and increase in the price of onion in the domestic market.
