One of the world's oldest mosques has been found in Israel. The mosque was discovered by Israeli archaeologists in the town of Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

An academic conference was recently held under the auspices of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Ben ZV Institute to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the founding of the city of Tiberias.

It reported the discovery of the remains of an eighth-century mosque in the northern Israeli city of Tiberias.

The research was conducted for 11 long years under the leadership of Katia Citren Silverman, an official of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Silverman said, ‘The city of Tiberias, now part of Israel, was an important economic and commercial center during the Islamic conquest. The mosque was built in this important area.

Historians already knew the location of an ancient mosque. But as the installation was underground, archaeologists were not fully aware of it. Like many other ancient mosques, an ancient mosque dating back to 703 AD in the ancient city of Wasi in Baghdad is still unexplored.
