Addressing the members of the police force, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that fundamental rights, human rights and rule of law should be given utmost importance while performing their professional duties. I hope that while performing their professional duties, the police force will give utmost importance to the fundamental rights of the people, human rights and the rule of law.
The Prime Minister was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the 36th BCS (Police Cadre) training at Saradha Bangladesh Police Academy in Rajshahi from her official residence Ganobhaban on Sunday.
She said the government would ensure peace and security of the people by establishing the rule of law and strengthening democracy. We need more to establish the rule of law, serve the people and improve the living standards of the people.
In this context, she asked the police members to gain the trust, confidence and love of the people.
If you can win the love, trust and confidence of the people, then the number of police force does not matter. With the help of the people, it will be possible to deal with any kind of crime. You have to be prepared that way and that's what we want, "she added.
She spoke of the growing number of cyber crimes and called on the police to crack down on them.
The Prime Minister further said that money laundering, cyber crime and human trafficking are global problems and Bangladesh needs to be saved from these.
She said the police force was making a significant contribution to the prevention of terrorism, militancy, drugs, violence against women and children.
She told police members that these should be handled more efficiently.
Sheikh Hasina stressed on the establishment of separate medical units for the treatment of the members of the force.
She further mentioned that the government is taking steps to modernize and improve the police hospitals outside Dhaka, especially at the divisional headquarters.
Talking about the development of the police force since 2009, the Prime Minister said the budget for the force was Tk 3,000 crore in 2009, but it has been increased to Tk 16,000 crore in the 2020-21 financial year.
She said the government has set up various units to control and suppress crime in the country. The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) have been formed to enhance the capacity of the police to curb militancy and terrorism.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Senior Secretary of the Department of Public Security Mostafa Kamal Uddin and Inspector General of Police. Benazir Ahmed delivered the speech.
Earlier, Asaduzzaman distributed various awards among the cadets for good results on behalf of the Prime Minister.
