Saidur Rahman has been elected as the mayor of the municipality from the night guard. In the election held on Saturday, he won the post of mayor of Mundumala municipality of Tanore upazila of Rajshahi. Saidur is a college night guard and municipal Awami League organizing secretary. He went against the party and participated in the elections as a rebel candidate.
Mundumala Municipality Returning Officer and Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sushant Kumar Mahato said independent candidate Saidur Rahman was elected mayor with 5,459 votes. His nearest rival Awami League party candidate Amir Hossain Amin got 5,398 votes for the boat symbol.
Newly elected mayor Saidur Rahman said the tide of people can never be stopped. I became the mayoral candidate under the pressure of the people. Then I was interrupted in many ways. Even the local top leaders of the party expelled me for taking a hard line against me. But in the end the people were able to give their verdict. However, as the mayor was elected, he will quit his job as a night watchman.
According to locals, Saidur Rahman rebelled against the party candidate in Mundumala municipality and was elected mayor. His house is in Mundumala mahalla of the municipal headquarters. She is the night watchman of Mundumala Women's College. Mundumala was the organizing secretary of the municipal Awami League. However, he was expelled from the party as he did not abide by the party's decision.
Earlier, about 10 party candidates from Awami League and Juba League entered the fray in the hope of getting nominated for the post of mayor in Mundumala municipality. But Amir Hossain Amin, general secretary of Mundumala Municipal Awami League and more than once elected councilor and panel mayor, was nominated.
Incumbent Mayor Ghulam Rabbani had earlier announced that he would not run for office. Everyone in the party accepted Amir Hossain as the party's candidate. Saidur Rahman submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate on December 31.
Golam Rabbani, president of Tanore Upazila Awami League and current mayor of Mundumala municipality, said Saidur municipality was the organizing secretary of the Awami League. He was barred from running. Even then he was a candidate. For this reason he was expelled from the party.
