Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated house distribution activities among 66,189 landless and homeless families across the country under Asrayan-2 project.

On Saturday morning, the Prime Minister attended the inaugural function via video conference from her official residence Ganobhaban and connected with 492 upazilas of the country.

On the occasion of 'Mujibvarsha', the government has constructed 66,189 houses at a cost of Tk 1,168 crore as part of its promise to provide houses to all landless and homeless families. This is a step the world has seen for the first time.

Each unit of the houses has two rooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a veranda, which cost Taka 1 lakh 75 thousand to build. One lakh more houses will be distributed among the poor next month.

In addition to the houses on Saturday, the land ownership documents of 66,189 landless and homeless families were also handed over to each of them. All the houses have been built on government khas land.

In addition, 3715 families will be rehabilitated by constructing 743 barracks under 44 projects in 36 upazilas of 21 districts under the shelter project of the Prime Minister's Office during the Mujib Year.

In 2020, 8 lakh 85 thousand 622 families were listed. Of which 2 lakh 93 thousand 361 are landless and homeless families and 5 lakh 92 thousand 261 are families who have 1 to 10 percent land but no housing system.

Through the Asrayan project, 3 lakh 20 thousand 58 landless and homeless families have been rehabilitated from 1997 to December 2020.

The duration of Asrayan-2 project is from July 2010 to June 2022. During this period, the target is to rehabilitate 250,000 landless, homeless and displaced families at a cost of Taka 4840.28 crore. The project has rehabilitated 1,92,277 landless and homeless families across the country from July 2010 to June 2019.

In addition, a total of 48,500 landless and homeless families have been rehabilitated in the barracks and 1,43,777 families who own land (1 to 10 per cent) but cannot afford to build houses have been rehabilitated in semi-barracks, specially designed houses.

The government is providing housing to homeless and landless families under the Asrayan-2 project, a housing project run by the Prime Minister's Office. The government has listed 2 lakh 93 thousand 361 homeless and landless families as well as 5 lakh 92 thousand 261 homeless families across the country.
