Nine countries have sided with Myanmar on the Rohingya issue. The countries are Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, Palau and the Solomon Islands.
Earlier in 2019, nine countries voted "abstention" or "abstain" in the UN General Assembly without taking a stand for or against Myanmar's resolution on Rohingya and minorities. This time they voted for the proposal.
Analyzing the vote on the proposal this time, former Annan Commission member and Dutch diplomat Leticia Vanden Assam wrote in a tweet that, compared to 2019, nine countries voted in favor of the proposal instead of their positions.
At a plenary session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday night, countries voted in favor of a similar proposal, moving away from the "Abstain" position. On the other hand, 130 countries, including Bangladesh, voted in favor of the proposal.
However, nine countries - Myanmar, China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe - voted against the proposal. Twenty-five countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Japan, voted for 'Abstain'. The proposal was passed by 130-9 votes.
