A Kuwaiti court has sentenced Ksazi Shahid Islam alias Papul, an independent MP from Laxmipur-2 (Raipur) constituency, to four years in prison on charges of human trafficking and money laundering.
The court also fined him 1.9 million dinars. The verdict in Papul's case was announced on Thursday. Judge Abdullah al-Osman of Kuwait's criminal court set the date after hearing the case on November 26 last year.
Papul is currently in prison in that country. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Papul on the night of June 6 last year in the Musharraf residential area of Kuwait on charges of money laundering and human trafficking.
The full hearing of the case against him began on September 17 of the same year. A total of 13 people, including two members of Kuwait's parliament, Sadoun Hamad and Salah Khurshid, and senior army officer Maj. Gen. Sheikh Majan al-Jarah, have been charged with involvement and aiding and abetting Papul.
Meanwhile, two Kuwaiti lawmakers have been granted bail by a court. On November 26, 2020, the court granted bail to senior army officer Major General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarah.
Several government contracts and work orders with the company have also been canceled.
