A Juba League leader named Riaz Uddin has filed a case against prominent mayor of Noakhali's Basurhat municipality Abdul Quader Mirza.

The case was filed in the district's senior judicial magistrate Amli court on Thursday.

Riaz Uddin is a UP member of Ward 3 of Ashwadia Union Parishad No. 10 in Sadar Upazila of the district and is the joint convener of the Juba League.

Speaking to the court and the plaintiffs, it was learned that the recent statements of Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza had tarnished the image of Noakhali MP Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Sadar Upazila Chairman Samsuddin Jehan and other party members. Apart from this, a statement of Abdul Quader Mirza was also mentioned in the case regarding giving Azan while giving a speech.

Palash Chandra Saha, counsel for the plaintiff in the case, said that the plaintiff Riaz Uddin had lodged a complaint against Basurhat Municipality Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza under Section 298/500/501 of the Penal Code for defaming one of his statements made on January 5.

However, as the judge of the Companiganj Amli Court was absent on Thursday, the plaintiff's statement in the case is to be recorded next Sunday.

Regarding the case, Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza said, "Numerous false cases have been filed against me in the past as well." This time, some of the miscreants of the party have been caught telling the truth.

Azam Pasha Chowdhury Rumel, vice chairman of Kompaniganj Upazila Parishad and general secretary of Basurhat Municipality Awami League, said a protest rally was called at Basurhat Bazar on Thursday afternoon to protest the filing of a false case against Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza. Besides, Mayor Abdul Quader Mirza will present his personal views through a press conference this evening.
