The Election Commission has postponed the election of Syedpur Municipality of Nilphamari due to the death of independent mayoral candidate and current mayor Amjad Hossain Sarkar. As a result, voting for the posts of mayor, general ward councilor and reserved women ward councilor will not take place on January 16.
The matter has been confirmed in a letter signed by Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission Atiyar Rahman. Earlier, Returning Officer Fazlul Karim issued a public notice canceling the election activities.
Independent candidate Amjad Hossain Sarkar, the BNP's central co-village government affairs secretary, died at a private hospital in Dhaka on Thursday morning. He was also a former MP and former Upazila Parishad chairman.
He will be buried at the family graveyard after Janazah at Maqbool Hossain College ground in Patwari Para of Syedpur city after Friday prayers.
