In the election of Zakiganj municipality of Sylhet, there was a fierce battle between two independent candidates. According to private results, Abdul Ahad won the mayoral post by a margin of just two votes.
According to the results, Abdul Ahad got 2,083 votes for the coconut tree symbol. He did not get the nomination of Awami League and revolted and became a candidate. He was later expelled. His closest rival, another Awami League rebel, Farooq Ahmed, received 2,081 votes.
Al-Islah candidate Hifzur Rahman was also in the fray. He got 1,978 votes for the mobile phone symbol.
Meanwhile, Awami League's boat symbol candidate Bir Muktijoddha Khalil Uddin got 669 votes and became number six.
BNP candidate Iqbal Ahmed came seventh with 610 votes. Besides, Jatiya Party candidate Abdul Malek got 769 votes, BNP rebel candidate Abdullah Al Mamun Hira got 185 votes and independent candidate Zafrul Islam got 1,156 votes.
