A child has been killed in a gas cylinder explosion at Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar. Another 10 people were injured in the incident. Many of the injured have lost their limbs.
The incident took place at Matarbari High School ground in Matarbari Union of the upazila around 11:15 am on Friday, said local UP chairman Mohammad Ullah.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ehsan, 12, son of Jahangir Alam of Dakshin Miyaji Para in Matarbari Union.
Confirming the incident, Maheshkhali Police Station OC Abdul Hai said the police rescued the victims from the spot and sent them to the hospital.
Matarbari Union Parishad Chairman Master Mohammad Ullah said the annual religious meeting of Matarbari Shah Majidia Madrasa was held on Friday. On this occasion, various types of shops were set up in the local Matarbari High School ground including the area adjacent to the madrasa from morning. Gas balloon posara also sits there. That's where the gas cylinder filling the balloon exploded. One person was killed and 10 others were seriously injured on the spot. Several shops were damaged during the incident.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Jahedul Islam said a fair was held at the school grounds on the occasion of the annual religious meeting of Matarbari Shah Majidia Madrasa. There are various shops in the fair. There were casualties when the balloon's gas cylinder exploded. A team of CID is working along with the police to find out the cause of the gas cylinder explosion.
