Abul Kalam Azad, 32, a Bangladeshi youth, was killed by a rubber bullet fired by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Patgram border in Lalmonirhat. The incident took place on Friday morning in the area adjacent to Main Pillar No. 848 on the Jhalangi border in Srirampur Union.
The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam Azad, son of late Joynal Abedin of Jhalangi village under Patra upazila.
Police said a group of seven to eight Bangladeshi cattle smugglers entered India illegally on Friday morning. At that time, members of the patrol team of the 140 BSF Battalion of India at Doradabri Camp fired rubber bullets at them. When Abul Kalam Azad was seriously injured, his companions rescued him and brought him to the Bangladesh border. Abul Kalam later died at Mahipur Bridge area after being taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for treatment. Later, Patgram police brought his body to the police station.
Patgram Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sumon Kumar Mohant admitted the incident and said the body would be handed over to the family after autopsy.
