A portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized at Dighinala in Khagrachhari. The vandalism took place at Mujib Chattar in front of the Merung police outpost, 12 km from the upazila headquarters, after the Fajr prayers on Tuesday. However, it was not known who caused the incident.
According to the locals, the incident took place after someone was inspired by the anti-sculpture speech of Maulana Abdul Hamid Noman, the Imam of Merung Bazar Jame Mosque. Police are trying to find those involved in the incident. Tensions are running high among leaders and activists of the local Awami League and allied organizations over the incident.
Speaking to some people present at the spot, it is learned that the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized after the market guards left after the Fajr call.
Police said the outpost could not be seen as to who caused the incident as a truck loaded with goods was parked on the north side of the extra fog and portrait.
Some leaders of the local Awami League and allied organizations said that Imam of the Jame Mosque in Merung Bazar, Maulana Abdul Hamid Noman, used to speak against idols and sculptures before Friday prayers. They claim that someone has vandalized the portrait of the father of the nation after being encouraged by the Imam's speech. They demanded exemplary punishment by arresting those involved in the incident.
Acknowledging the truth of the incident, Dighinala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Uttam Chandra Dev said that police efforts have been intensified to arrest those involved in the incident of vandalism of Bangabandhu's portrait. Additional police have been deployed at the spot. He also said that the police is on alert to prevent such incidents anywhere in the upazila.
