Two journalists have been attacked while collecting news on allegations of irregularities and corruption in the government's shelter project in Bogra. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when I went to collect news of the shelter project at Dashtika village in Bogra Sadar.
The injured are Majidur Rahman Majed, staff reporter of Samay Television's Bogra office and Bangladesh Pratidin Joypurhat correspondent and his camera person Rabiul Islam Robi.
The injured were rescued and admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital. The attackers vandalized the journalists' cameras, four mobile phones, wallets, money and other items.
Journalist Majed, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital, said he went with cameraman Rabiul Islam on Wednesday afternoon to collect news of the shelter project at Dashtika village in Bogra Sadar. They arrived at the scene and recorded a video of them working with low quality bricks and low amount of cement. Meanwhile, local Nishindhara UP member Lutfar Rahman Lal Mia and his associates led by Labor League leader Johnny attacked.
They smashed the camera and snatched the two and beat them severely. They were injured and fell to the ground. Upon receiving the news, Sadar Police and Upazila Nirbahi Officer rescued them and admitted them to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Bogra Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Humayun Kabir said police rescued two injured journalists and admitted them to hospital. Police have launched an operation in the area to arrest those involved in the incident. Journalists Majed and Robi were attacked while collecting news there.
Bogra Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Azizur Rahman said construction of houses is underway in Dashtika village of Bogra Sadar under the Shelter for Homeless Landless project of the Prime Minister's Office on the occasion of Mujib centenary. Journalists were attacked when they went there to cover the news.
Meanwhile, locals said that when the journalists went to see the work and asked the villagers how the work was going, some youths came and attacked and beat them.
