Russia has been banned from the stadium for two years. The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced the decision on Thursday. Russia is therefore not taking part in hosting top-level sports, including the Tokyo Olympics and the Qatar World Cup.
Earlier, Russia was banned by the International Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for four years. But Russia protested the ban. CAS has reduced that sentence from four years to two years. Even then, Russia is unable to participate in the Olympics and World Cup, the two largest sports events in the world.
Russia will have the embargo until December 16, 2022. The Qatar World Cup will start in November. At this time, they will not be able to participate in the 2022 Beijing Paralympics without the Olympics-World Cup. However, they will be able to take part in the 2022 Euro. Because Euro is hosted by UEFA, it is not being seen as a global or big event.
In a statement, the CAS said in a statement that the panel had ruled that the ban was a "grave violation" of the policy. This continuity of being active against doping will be maintained in order to maintain morality on the playground. The punishment given by Wader has been reduced, but there is no way to think that it has given legitimacy to the violation of policy.
