Clashes broke out between the two groups over a protest procession and rally organized by Hajiganj Upazila Awami League in Chandpur to protest the demolition of Bangabandhu's sculpture. The protest stage has been vandalized. The clash took place at Hajiganj crossroads of Chandpur-Comilla regional highway from noon to evening on Tuesday. At least 20 people were injured. Police fired 122 rounds of blank shotgun to bring the situation under control. The injured were treated at Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex and a local private hospital.
Locals said Awami League leaders and activists vandalized Mancha and Ekushey Hospitals, several CNG-powered autorickshaws and buses before the rally began at noon. They tried to block the road by burning tires and pieces of wood. In retaliation, another group of Awami League went to Hajiganj West Bazaar and threw brick-bats at Rafa Tower.
When the situation came under control due to the activities of Hajiganj Thana Police and Detective Police, leaders and activists from different unions joined the rally in the afternoon with banners and festoons.
District Awami League President Nasir Ahmed Bhuiyan, General Secretary Abu Naeem Patwari Dulal and Hajiganj Upazila Awami League President Helal Uddin Miaji and General Secretary Gazi Mohammad addressed the rally. Mainuddin.
