The indefinite strike at petrol pumps and CNG stations in Sylhet from Sunday has finally been called off. The strike was postponed during a meeting with the deputy commissioner in his conference room on Saturday, Jubayer Ahmed Chowdhury, president of the Sylhet division of Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors Agents and Petrol Pump Owners Association.

He said the Awami League leaders present at the meeting, including the deputy commissioner, assured us of implementing our six-point demand in phases. As a result, the strike was called off.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner M Kazi Emdadul Islam and was attended by Mahanagar Awami League President Bir Muktijoddha Masuk Uddin Ahmed, District Awami League General Secretary Advocate Nasir Uddin Khan, Energy Business Leader Jubayer Ahmed Chowdhury, Mostafa Kamal, Khan Mohammad Farid Uddin, Amiruzzaman Chowdhury Dulu. Recently, fuel traders called for a six-point strike in protest of the imposition of fines on four petrol pumps in Sylhet. Their 6-point demands include stopping the supply of substandard petrol by fuel oil marketing companies; Supply of high quality petrol to Sylhet gas field as before; Setting up fuel oil testing labs at every depot to control fuel oil quality; Stop unjust and intentional harassment by various government agencies; To keep representatives in petrol pump and gas related organizations during the campaign and to immediately withdraw the official of the Consumer Rights Protection Department from Sylhet.
