Selina Islam, wife of Laxmipur-2 MP Kazi Shahid Islam Papul, and their daughter Wafa Islam have been granted bail in a money laundering case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayesh granted bail to them.
Lawyers Mosharraf Hossain Kajal and Mahmud Hossain Jahangir were in favor of the ACC in the court.
Earlier, on December 22, the High Court directed Papul's wife and daughter to surrender before the court by December 28.
On November 11, the ACC filed a case against MP Shahid Islam Papul, his wife, daughter and sister-in-law for smuggling illegal assets worth Tk 2.31 crore and money worth Tk 148 crore. They later applied to the High Court for anticipatory bail.
On December 10, the High Court gave them 10 days to surrender to the court. But they did not surrender as the lower court was on vacation. At this stage, on December 22, the High Court ordered the hearing of the supplementary application filed on behalf of Papul's wife and daughter.
Earlier, MP Shahid Islam Papul was arrested in Kuwait on charges of money and human trafficking. He is currently in prison in Kuwait. The case is expected to be heard in a Kuwaiti court on January 28.
Based on the sources in the case, the ACC decided to investigate the allegation of smuggling money abroad through hundi by earning hundreds of crores of rupees in known non-income ways including human trafficking.
