Members of the so-called new cabinet have been attacked after returning to Yemen after taking oath in Saudi Arabia. Recently, Mansoor Hadi, known as the fugitive president, has formed a new cabinet.
Massive explosions and gunfire could be heard as cabinet members arrived at Aden Airport today.
Witnesses said the blasts and shelling occurred during the landing of a plane carrying members of the new government. Many people are feared to have been killed in the mortar shell attack. However, no government minister was injured. At least five people were killed and at least 20 others were injured in the blast, Russian media outlet Sputnik reported.
A source said drones were heard flying at the airport before the blast.
Eyewitnesses and various Saudi media reported that members of the cabinet, including Prime Minister Moin Abdul Malik, were evacuated to Aden after the blasts and shelling.
Alleged cabinet members Muammar and Riyani have blamed popular group Huthi Ansarullah for today's attack. But Ansarullah's influential leader, Mohammed al-Bakhiti, said Ansarullah had nothing to do with today's bombings and shootings. He said such baseless allegations had been made against Ansarullah before.
Saudi Arabia and its allies have been aggressing in Yemen since 2015.
