The moderate cold wave over Rangpur Division continues. As a result, the temperature in this region has also come down. The lowest temperature of the country was recorded in Kurigram district of Rangpur division on Saturday. The Agriculture and Synaptic Meteorological Observatory at Rajarhat in the district recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius at 9 am.
Earlier, at 9 am on Friday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 10 degrees Celsius. In other words, the temperature has decreased by 3.4 degrees Celsius in 24 hours.
Subal Chandra Sarkar, officer-in-charge of the Agriculture and Synaptic Meteorological Observatory, said there was a slight contrast in the weather this time. Although the temperature has been dropping for the last two days, the fog is clearing with the dawn. As there are no clouds in the sky, the face of the sun can be seen in the morning. Light is available throughout the day. As a result, the maximum temperature of the day is rising to 23 degrees Celsius. However, it is getting cold in Kankan from evening till dawn as the north wind is blowing.
Meanwhile, the people of Dwipchar and coastal Char villages in Kurigram district have suffered the most in the severe winter. Most of the people living in these areas are extremely poor and cannot afford winter clothes. As a result, they are suffering in winter.
Ayub Ali Sarkar, chairman of Jatrapur union in Sadar upazila, which is bordered by Brahmaputra, Dudhkumar and Gangadhar rivers, said 20 of the 32 villages in his union are Dwipchar and Chargram on the river banks. About 15,000 people from about 2,500 families live in these archipelago and coastal char villages. Most of them are extremely poor and day laborers. Many of them are suffering from cold because they cannot afford to buy winter clothes.
He added that only 400 blankets have been allocated by the government, which is less than required. They were distributed on December 9.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer. Abdul Hai Sarkar said 450 blankets and 35,000 blankets have been distributed in 73 unions of 9 upazilas and 3 municipalities of the district. Besides, 6 lakh and 54 lakh rupees have been allocated in each of the 9 upazilas. With this money, winter clothes are being purchased and distributed locally.
He added that the disaster management committees at the upazila and union levels are trying to bring winter clothes to the doorsteps of the extremely cold-stricken people.
