An Indian smuggler was killed in an exchange of fire with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) patrol on the Bangladesh-India border at Haluaghat in Mymensingh. The incident took place on Tuesday morning. A BGB member was also injured at the time.
According to police and BGB sources, a BGB team was patrolling near Sub-Pillar 4-S of 1129 Main Pillar in Suryapur Dumlikura area of Gazirvita Union of the upazila on Monday night. At around 3 pm, a group of 7 to 8 smugglers tried to enter Bangladesh through the border. At that time, when the BGB patrol team asked the smugglers to stop, they opened fire on the BGB members. A BGB member was also injured. When the BGB members fired back, the members of the smuggling ring fled. Later, the body of a smuggler was found at the spot.
According to the identity card of the man, his name is David Momen (46). He is a resident of Garohills, Meghalaya, India. 260 pieces of yaba, 12 bottles of liquor and two photos were recovered from the spot. The BSF claimed that the man was not an Indian citizen. However, after identification, the BSF tried to take away the body.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Gobrakura Camp Commander Naik Subedar. Umar Farooq told Samakal that the BGB exchanged fire with the smugglers during patrol duty. It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
Haluaghat Police Station OC Mahmudul Hasan said the body was recovered and sent to the morgue for autopsy. Yaba, alcohol and two photos were recovered from the spot.
