Heavy snowfall in Japan over the past three days has cut off power to more than 10,000 families. The country's Niigata and Gunma regions have seen heavy snowfall. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has called an emergency meeting to deal with the disaster. This was reported by Reuters.

The state-run media told the NHK that the heavy snowfall had accumulated about six and a half feet of snow in different parts of the two districts. The country's meteorological department fears more snow and avalanches. About a thousand vehicles were stranded on the Kan Etsu Expressway between Yojawa and Sukieno due to snow. And another expressway is reported to have about a dozen cars stuck. As a result, the people living there have suffered severely.

Rescue workers are providing food, fuel and warm clothing to those trapped in the snow, Japan's Cabinet Secretary Katsunobo Kato told a news conference. He is also looking after their safety.
