A court has sentenced three youths to death and fined them Rs 100,000 each for raping and killing teenager Dhanita Tripura in Khagrachari. Khagrachhari Women and Child Suppression Tribunal Judge Mahang Abu Taher handed down the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The convicts are Rumendra Tripura alias Rumen, Triron Tripura and Kambal Tripura. Among them are blanket Tripura fugitives.
Khagrachhari Public Prosecutor Advocate Bidhan Kanungo said that on May 13, 2019, Man Mohan Tripura and Swaralekha Tripura, residents of Bara Para in Bhaibonchhara in Khagrachhari Sadar, left their teenage daughter Dhanita Tripura (17) alone at home and went to Dighinala. On this occasion, three youths of Bejachandra Para of the same union entered the house under the influence of alcohol and gang-raped and killed the girl. The next morning, the police, with the help of locals, arrested the three youths. The girl's mother Swaralekha Tripura filed a case accusing the three. Police filed a chargesheet in court on August 28 of the same year. Twenty-two witnesses in the case testified in court.
Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, he said that as the allegations against the accused were proved beyond doubt, the court sentenced each of them to death and fined them Rs one lakh under Section 302/34 of the Penal Code.
