A Rangpur court has granted a four-day remand to police constable Hasan Ali in connection with the death of disabled rickshaw puller Nazmul Islam. Besides, his wife Sathi Begum has been allowed to be interrogated at the jail gate.
Judge Fazle Elahi Khan of the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court (Tajahat) passed the order on Wednesday afternoon.
The accused were present in the court during the remand hearing. The matter has been confirmed by Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kotwali Zone) Altaf Hossain.
On the evening of December 23, police recovered the hanging body of disabled rickshaw puller Nazmul Islam from the rented house of policeman Hasan Ali in Asratpur Courtpara area of the city. Later, locals staged a protest and blocked the road with allegations against Constable Hasan Ali and his wife.
Police arrested the police constable and his wife soon after the incident. Nazmul had a dispute with Hasan Ali over the theft of a rickshaw the night before. Due to this Hasan Ali beat the disabled Nazmul.
At one stage, when the situation became critical, Hasan Ali took him to his rented house in Ashratpur Courtpara area. Police later recovered Nazmul's hanging body from the house. On the same night, Nazmul's wife Shyamoli Begum filed a case accusing police constable Hasan Ali and his wife Sathi Begum.
On December 24, the accused was produced in court and remanded for five days. Following the hearing on Wednesday, the court remanded Hasan Ali for four days and allowed his wife to be interrogated at the jail gate.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police Altaf Hossain said the hanging body of rickshaw puller Nazmul was recovered after breaking the door of the house. The victim's wife has filed a case in this regard. The accused has been remanded. Interrogation and investigation will reveal the real facts.
